Renal Pharma

The way for a global and integrated treatment of end-stage chronic renal disease.

Fresenius Medical Care is now complementing its leading dialysis technologies, products and services with renal pharmaceuticals. The renal pharma division within Fresenius Medical Care will continuously build up and provide a comprehensive range of drugs and drive their integration into innovative treatment platforms to achieve improved therapeutic outcomes in dialysis patients.

Our prime commitment is to improve clinical results for dialysis patients. For us, aiming at comprehensive care that integrates the best possible dialysis therapy and patient support is the key to increasing life expectancy and improving quality of life in end-stage renal disease.

With renal pharmaceuticals, Fresenius Medical Care is setting out to provide a range of drugs for treating patients with chronic and acute renal failure, complementing our leadership in dialysis technology and service platforms. The renal pharmaceutical portfolio expands the role of Fresenius Medical Care as a fully integrated renal care provider. Pursuing innovative, integrated solutions will best meet the increasing demands of modern patient-focused renal therapy, by cost efficient delivery of optimal quality of care.

The initial portfolio of dialysis-related drugs comprises phosphate binders, potassium binders, as well as a novel drug for anaemia management.
Further expansion of the dialysis-related drug portfolio will bring additional drugs and new formulations as well as drug/device combinations for integrated drug application with dialysis machines.

We estimate that the worldwide market value of dialysis drugs, excluding erythropoesis stimulating agents (ESA), amounted to more than 1.7 billion euros in 2007. Fresenius Medical Care aims to achieve a significant share of this segment and generate revenue of about 310 millions euros by 2010.

Therefore, we have established associations with companies that add value to our patient care, namely:
- with Amgen in two important projects at european level. One of them, a joint research project aimed at further improving treatment outcomes for kidney patients in Europe, and the other, disseminating scientific information regarding the treatment of anemia to nephrologists and other dialysis experts;
- with Vifor / Galenica concerning all commercialization activities related to drugs used for treating iron deficiency anemia experienced by dialysis patients.

Fresenius Medical Care is aware of the importance of the ethical issues that nowadays present scientific advances set. Therefore, related to the established associations and the necessary scientific development of renal pharmaceuticals, the national clinical trials are submitted to evaluation to the Fresenius Medical Care Portugal’s Ethics Committee.
